Bio

Irene Zwiep is professor of Hebrew and Jewish studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests include the history of scholarship and Jewish intellectual history, with special emphasis on the history of Hebrew linguistic thought, the Jewish Enlightenment, and the European Wissenschaft des Judentums. Her recent essays include “Jewish Enlightenment (almost) without Haskalah: The Dutch Example” (2012); “The Wissenschaft des Judentums and the Visual” (2012); and “Scholarship of Literature and Life: Leopold Zunz and the Invention of Jewish Culture” (2010). During the fall semester, Professor Zwiep is beginning work on a project titled “Truth, Beauty, and the Jews: A Conceptual History of Nineteenth-Century Jewish Historicism.”
