Converting Canvas: Christian Art's Struggle with Judaism from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance

David Nirenberg is the Deborah R. and Edgar D. Jannotta Professor of Medieval History and Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He studies Christians, Jews, and Muslims in Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. His first book, Communities of Violence: Persecution in the Middle Ages, dealt with the social interaction between the three groups with the context of Spain and France. His most recent project, The Figure of the Jew: from Ancient Egypt to the Present, is forthcoming with W.W. Norton. He has also explored contemporary implications of this history in less specialized venues such as the New Republic, the London Review of Books, the Nation, and Dissent.
