Performing as Tsvey Brider, Yiddish songwriting, arranging, and performing duo Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell (vocalist) and Dmitri Gaskin (accordionist) create new musical idioms by combining two distinct older ones: African American spirituals and the music of Jewish Eastern Europe. Drawing from folk songs, lullabies, art, and religious music, Children of the Ghetto + Black Shul mobilizes an array of historic genres to create a repertoire of songs authentically inhabiting the sounds and histories of two traditions.

The Daedalus Quartet, Penn’s quartet-in-residence, explores migration through music, illustrating how centuries of cultural cross-pollination has enriched our artistic and spiritual life. Music truly has no borders, unifying through the universality of the human experience. In this performance, the quartet will perform works that exhibit the richness and complexity of this cultural convergence, including a world premiere of traditional African American spirituals by Nansi Carroll.

26th Annual Gruss Colloquium

The Gruss Colloquium is the culminating event of our fellowship year focused on “The Jewish Home.” Over these two days, we will engage a series of questions meant to generate a discussion of Jewish domestic experience across time a space. How were (and are) intimacy and power between householders of different gender, status, generation, and religious affiliation negotiated in Jewish homes? How do Jewish homes, both enacted and imagined, force us to transcend narrow definitions presumptions and clichés of modern domesticity? And, just as we tend to use the metaphor of “nesting” when talking about homes, they are often also sites of violence, resistance and revolt. Finally, an empty space is not a home; how have Jews used ritual objects to make a house, and in some cases, an institutional space, into a home? The conference will conclude with a round-table in which we will have the occasion to reflect on the year’s work, the contributions to the conference, and ways forward.

The Katz Center joins forces with the Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, combining a screening of “There Are No Lions in Tel Aviv” (2019, dir. Duki Dror) with commentary on the film’s themes and context. Katz Center fellow and Israeli architectural historian Sigal Davidi will discuss the early urban development of Tel Aviv.

Film synopsis:
THERE ARE NO LIONS IN TEL AVIV tells the story of the chief rabbi of Copenhagen’s Jewish community, Max Shorenstein, who would come to be known as Rabbi Doolittle. Arriving in Tel Aviv in 1935, Shorenstein left his honorable position in order to fulfill a longtime dream: build a zoo and teach the children of Palestine-Eretz Israel about the love of animals. His dream had come true and against all odds, the Tel Aviv Zoo became the city’s greatest attraction. Yet the envy, greed and corruption by city officials had him banished from the very paradise he himself built. It is a tale of a city raised from sand, only to become an international cultural and financial hub a century later, and the price that was paid for this exponential growth.
