How were (and are) intimacy and power between householders of different gender, status, generation, and religious affiliation negotiated in Jewish homes? How do Jewish homes, both enacted and imagined, force us to transcend narrow definitions presumptions and clichés of modern domesticity? And, just as we tend to use the metaphor of “nesting” when talking about homes, they are often also sites of violence, resistance and revolt.  Finally, an empty space is not a home; how have Jews used ritual objects to make a house, and in some cases, an institutional space, into a home? The conference will conclude with a round-table in which we will have the occasion to reflect on the year’s work, the contributions to the conference, and ways forward.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-audience field--type-list-string field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Audience</div> <div class="field--item">For the Academic Community</div> </div> <span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_32 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://katz.sas.upenn.edu/events/jewish-home-boundaries-domesticity-and-power" data-a2a-title="The Jewish Home: Boundaries, Domesticity and Power"><span class="share-label">Share: </span><a class="a2a_button_facebook"><span class="a2a_label">share on facebook</span></a><a class="a2a_button_twitter"><span class="a2a_label">share on twitter</span></a></span> <div class="field field--name-field-event-explore-events field--type-entity-reference field--label-above event__explore--items-3"> <div class="field--label">Explore events</div> <div class="explore-events"> <a href="/events/gruss-colloquium/order-reorder-and-disorder-jews-and-muslims-encountering-modern-era" hreflang="en">Order, Reorder, and Disorder: Jews and Muslims Encountering the Modern Era</a> <a href="/events/gruss-colloquium/science-and-transformation-jewish-culture" hreflang="en">Science and Transformation in Jewish Culture</a> <a href="/events/gruss-colloquium/expanding-jewish-political-thought-beneath-between-and-beyond-state" hreflang="en">Expanding Jewish Political Thought: Beneath, Between, and Beyond the State</a> </div> </div> Mon, 11 Nov 2019 18:14:19 +0000 beckysf@upenn.edu 7130 at https://katz.sas.upenn.edu What is the Meaning of Home? https://katz.sas.upenn.edu/resources/blog/what-meaning-home <span property="schema:name">What is the Meaning of Home? </span> <span rel="schema:author"><span lang="" about="/user/8" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">beckysf@upenn.edu</span></span> <span property="schema:dateCreated" content="2019-09-17T14:24:14+00:00">September 17, 2019</span> Tue, 17 Sep 2019 14:24:14 +0000 beckysf@upenn.edu 7110 at https://katz.sas.upenn.edu Film Screening & Talk: "There Are No Lions in Tel Aviv" https://katz.sas.upenn.edu/events/public-program/film-screening-talk-there-are-no-lions-tel-aviv <span>Film Screening &amp; Talk: &quot; There Are No Lions in Tel Aviv&quot;</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/8" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">beckysf@upenn.edu</span></span> <span>September 04, 2019</span> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>The Katz Center joins forces with the Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, combining a screening of “<span><span>There Are No Lions in Tel Aviv</span></span>” (2019, dir. Arriving in Tel Aviv in 1935, Shorenstein left his honorable position in order to fulfill a longtime dream: build a zoo and teach the children of Palestine-Eretz Israel about the love of animals. His dream had come true and against all odds, the Tel Aviv Zoo became the city’s greatest attraction.
