Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz and her children have made a gift to endow and name the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. It is the single largest endowment gift to the Center since its creation in 1993. In September 2008 we hosted an event celebrating the new name with the Katz family and friends, university officials, Penn faculty and students, the Katz Center Board of Overseers, and the current fellows. At the beautiful Katz Center library several speakers described Herb’s love for both the Center and the University of Pennsylvania. Penn President Amy Gutmann said that tzedakah (charity) was for Herb a fundamental way of life. The Dean of Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences, Rebecca Bushnell, spoke about Herb’s deep appreciation for the power of ideas. David Ruderman adapted an ancient rabbinic text to characterize Herb’s good heart as the finest of all qualities. It is hard to imagine a more appropriate way of remembering this great man.
