Jewish Art and Jewish History: The Universalist Tradition

Ezra Mendelsohn, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Ezra Mendelsohn is a scholar of modern Jewish history, with a special interest in East European Jewish history in general and in Jewish politics in particular. He has also published in the field of modern Jewish cultural studies, concentrating on Jewish participation in European musical life and on the European and American art world. He is co-editor of the annual journal Studies in Contemporary Jewry, and the author, most recently, of On Modern Jewish Politics, which won the Wischnitzer Award of the Hebrew University in 1996. He is currently writing a monograph on the Polish-Jewish artist, Maurycy Gottlieb.
